Local Guide: What to Do in Maine This Fall

Although summer in Maine is beautiful, with its warm weather and sun-filled activities, there’s just something special about fall in Maine. From apple orchards to scenic hikes, fall in the Pine Tree State offers many activities that are perfect for enjoying all that fall has to offer. Whether you're a local, a newcomer, or just visiting, here’s my guide to making the most of Maine this fall.

Apple Picking

There's no better way to kick off the fall season than with an afternoon of apple picking! Maine has hundreds of orchards across the state to choose from. One of my favorites is Hansel’s Orchard in Yarmouth. As a Yarmouth native, I have always had a soft spot in my heart for this orchard, and it’s just 20 minutes from Portland!

I am always on the hunt for the best GF recipes to make the most of the apples I pick! If you are gluten-free like me, you have to try this Gluten-Free Apple Crumble Recipe. It's a perfect recipe to celebrate the season and fill your home with the nostalgic scents of fall in Maine.

Hiking in Sugarloaf and Rangeley

One of my favorite things to do in the fall is spend time hiking and soaking in Maine’s most scenic overlooks and gorgeous fall colors! Fall is the perfect time to hike. Not only are the temperatures cooler, but the bugs are gone and so is the humidity. It is no secret that I love the Sugarloaf and Rangeley areas and hikes like Bald Mountain and Burnt Hill are perfect in the fall. Don’t forget that higher elevation means peak foliage happens earlier, so don’t delay planning your trip! The mountains are waiting.

The scenic drive from Portland to Maine’s Western Mountains is striking, offering stunning views along the way. Remember there is no shame in pulling over for scenic photo ops or apple cider donuts at local orchards!

Cozy Backyard Fires

Fall is the ideal time for cozying up around a backyard fire. As the temperatures drop, there’s nothing quite like gathering with friends and family, roasting marshmallows, and enjoying cooler nights. If you’re looking to create the perfect ambiance, consider adding some warm throws and a few string lights to make your backyard the ultimate fall retreat.

Scenic Chairlift Rides

Experience the beauty of fall from a new perspective with scenic chairlift rides at some of Maine’s top ski resorts. Sugarloaf, Sunday River, and Saddleback all offer chairlift rides that let you enjoy panoramic views of the autumn landscape. Check their schedules and take a leisurely ride to appreciate the breathtaking colors of the season.

Explore Local Fairs

Autumn in Maine also means fair season! Don’t miss the Cumberland County Fair and the Fryeburg Fair, two of Maine’s most beloved fall traditions. These fairs offer a mix of local food, crafts, and entertainment. From rides and games to fried dough and apple cider, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

From apple picking and scenic hikes to cozy backyard fires and scenic chairlift rides, Maine is a fall lover’s paradise. Whether you're looking to enjoy the great outdoors, indulge in seasonal treats, or simply relax, there's no shortage of activities to make your fall memorable.
